Sports Fitness Program
Sponsored by the Department of Kinesiology and Community Health University of Illinois
Originally founded in 1951, the Department of Kinesiology & Community Health Sports Fitness Program has the distinction of being one of the longest running summer youth fitness programs in the country. The program began as a service to the communities of Champaign and Urbana with the intent being to provide an opportunity for children to stay physically active in an organized environment during the summer months.
All New in 2009
New in 2009, the Sports Fitness Program is expanding its programming to include options for full-day or half-day enrollment. We also have options for enrolling children for either four or eight weeks. Most exciting we have brand new, state-of-the-art, Campus Recreation indoor and outdoor facilities available for the program. Activities this year will be taking place in the newly renovated Activities and Recreation Center (ARC), Campus Recreation Center East (CRCE), and Freer Hall. Included in these facilities will be activities at the ARC rock climbing wall, instructional kitchen, newly renovated gyms, and outdoor turf fields.
Topics List
Topics:
Mission and Purpose
The program's primary emphasis is on developing:
Goals:
- enjoyment in physical activity;
- physical and motor fitness;
- fundamental motor skill patterns;
- skills in a variety of activities;
- cognitive understanding of the skills and activities;
- social and communication skills; and
- creativity.
One of the primary objectives of our program is to promote the principles of character...Respect, Responsibility, Caring, Honesty, Fairness, and Good Citizenship. With this in mind, we emphasize participation, effort, and cooperation rather than competition and the outcome of a contest. We also believe that physical activity alone does not result in a healthy lifestyle. New this year, we will have lessons in nutrition and opportunities to learn how to prepare healthy snacks and meals in the ARC instructional kitchen.
The program has two components:
Program Components
- Physical activity and instruction. In this area the children learn and develop the skills necessary to successfully participate in, and enjoy, a variety of activities and games. Our goal is to provide an avenue for a continued physically active lifestyle outside of the program.
- Measurement and research. The children may serve as research subjects for the study of selected aspects of physical activity, health, and nutrition for children.
Program Activities:
The Sports Fitness Program is not your typical "sport camp." While we introduce the participants to a variety of sports and activities, we do not specialize in any one area. Participants will receive instruction in areas to include: Team Sports (Soccer, Flag Football, Softball, Ultimate Disc, Basketball, and others); Individual and Dual Sports (Tennis, Badminton, Aerobics, Skating, Tumbling, Fitness Walking, and more); Aquatics (Stroke development, Water Safety, Diving, Aquatics Fitness, and Water Games); Adventure Education (Rock Climbing, Geo-Caching, Kayaking, and Team Building Activities); and Nutrition Education (Classroom and laboratory instruction on healthy eating habits.
